Proper Motorcycle Etiquette
When you think about riding a motorcycle, “etiquette” may not be the first or even the tenth word that comes to mind. However, just like anything else, motorcycling has its unwritten rules, because riders want to respect each other and avoid causing trouble. Here are some of the guidelines you’ll want to follow if you wish to master excellent motorcycle etiquette.
Never Touch Someone’s Bike
No matter how shiny the chrome or how sleek the leather, you simply cannot reach out and touch someone else’s bike without their express permission. You could do damage to the bike or even knock it over if you’re not careful; imagine how you would feel if someone did the same to you! Always ask before you lay a finger on anyone’s ride and accept whatever answer you’re given.
Nod Hello
When you see a fellow rider on the road, you should always give them some kind of acknowledgement. A brief wave or a nod of your head will suffice. It would be rude to pass them by and ignore them entirely. Also, if you see a rider tap their helmet, this is a courtesy gesture that means “there’s a cop ahead,” so you’ll want to slow down and be careful.
Follow Traffic Rules
Some motorcyclists think that the smaller size of their means of transportation allows them the chance to flout the rules of the road, but this isn’t just rude — it’s highly dangerous. Even if the traffic is going at a snail’s pace, you should never try to weave your way between vehicles or zoom down the shoulder of the highway. You should also give other vehicles the right of way when it’s their turn.
